It seems like everything’s gone digital in the last 10 years: we send emails instead of writing letters; we do research online instead of at the library; we get our news online instead of learning about events from a trusted news anchor on the evening news; we even do our banking online! But there is something distinctively special about receiving something in our mailboxes other than bills: no amount of digital convenience can replace sending that special someone a handwritten note. Here are some occasions when only the “real thing” will do.

To Say Thank You

Along with become more digitally-minded, it seems as if the world has also forgotten its manners! It is important to show appreciation for a kind turn, an enjoyable dinner party, and for that special wedding gift that a guest spent so much time searching for. Sending a note card with a hand-written message shows that the person’s efforts are valued and that he or she is important. When sending multiple cards, make sure that its message doesn’t sound like a form letter: keep it personal.

To Say I Love You

Although online digital card companies offer animation, music, and even templates for what to write, such cards not nearly as intimate as a hand-written expression of affection and love. There is something deeply felt about being able to handle a love note tangibly, and to read and reread it at leisure. Best of all, it can be saved in a special place where it can be rediscovered years later!

Just Because

A note in the mail is a really special thing for a child to receive: how about sending one to your niece or nephew who is going to school for the first time? Sending a note card needs no special or distinctive reason. Sometimes it’s nice to send one “just because.”

In this digital age, let’s not let the art of sending cards by mail become a thing of the past: it’s well worth the effort, both for the sender and for the recipient.
